The Benefits of Powder-Coated Tubes and Fittings

The Benefits of Powder-Coated Tubes and Fittings

Powder-coating is a method of painting metal, different from traditional methods. It works by spraying fine resin powder onto the surface of a product and utilising electrostatic implements. The charge causes the powder to adhere to the metal, which is then treated with heat and cured to create a smooth surface and decorative finish.

Powder-coated tubes and fittings are a popular choice for building handrails, barriers or signs, and can even be used to design custom clothes-rails or exercise equipment.

This technique comes with many advantages over traditional liquid paint and can be the ideal finish to use. Read on to see what products you can choose from and to learn more about the benefits.

What options are available?

Fixings & Fittings offers 3m lengths of tube in standard stock colours, available to order directly in our shop. They are supplied in sizes A27, B34, C42 & D48 in an all gloss finish.

For bespoke orders, we offer a cut-to-length service and provide powder-coated tubes and Interclamp fittings in all colours on the RAL and British Standard colour chart.

Why use powder-coated tubes and fittings?

Added durability

Powder-coated tubes and fittings are longer-lasting and more durable than other options. This is because powder-coating provides resistance to moisture and corrosion, chemicals and harsh weather conditions, as well as protection against flaking or scratching the metal underneath. It comes in particularly useful when used on exercise equipment, safety barriers, cycle racks or trolley bays. In addition, UV-resistant powder can slow down fading and protect the colour of fittings over a long period of time.

Aesthetic appeal and customisation

Powder-coated tubes and fittings come in a variety of attractive finishes and colours. Tubes in bright colours, such as traffic yellow or traffic white, can be combined with Interclamp fittings for high visibility in low-light and safety-orientated applications and to further assist the visually impaired.

Environmentally-friendly

Powder-coating is more eco-friendly than liquid paints, as it’s free of solvents and adheres to the metal through an electrical charge on the surface. This means it doesn’t release toxic chemicals into the air and is safe for disposal. Because powder-coating offers high durability, it is also less likely to loosen or chip compared to wet paint and therefore doesn’t pose a threat to fragile ecosystems. However, experts must still wear protective clothing and masks when applying the finish, to avoid inhalation or skin contact.

Low-maintenance

Powder-coating is easy to maintain and no special cleaners or solvents are needed. Because the thermal bonding process makes this coating so durable, there is no concern over rust and other cleaning-related damage. In most applications, wiping tubes and fittings with soapy water is enough to maintain their appearance for a long time. This makes it a very time-efficient and cost-effective option in the long run.
